The Namib has been arid, in some form, for at least 55 million years, which makes it the oldest desert on the planet. Its dune belt begins where Swakopmund ends. Tarmac gives way to sand inside a single block, and the town's eastern edge functions as a trailhead.
Swakopmund Desert Dunes Quad Biking With Optional Sandboard grew out of that geography rather than any masterplan. The sand sea was simply there, at the end of the street.
Swakopmund was founded in 1892 as a landing site for the German colonial administration, which wanted a harbour it did not have to share with the British enclave at Walvis Bay. The result was a port town with almost no natural port. Wilhelmine architecture followed: the Woermannhaus tower of 1905, the Hohenzollern Building, the jetty rebuilt in iron in 1911. Independence in 1990 redrew the map and the street names. Nathaniel Maxuilili, the road that carries the address for the town's desert operators, honours a Namibian trade unionist imprisoned during the liberation struggle.
The dune fields east of town sit inside Dorob National Park, proclaimed in 2010, which folded the coastal gravel plains and the sand belt into one protected unit. Sandboarding reached the town in the 1990s, when operators recognised that the slipfaces above the Swakop River valley hold a consistent angle of repose close to 34 degrees.
